Philippine Deaf Basketball League opening game


First for the league's third season

The Philippine Deaf Basketball League (PDBL) recently opened its third season with a game between the Laguna Hapee Team and the College of Saint Benilde Saints, which was held at the Makati Coliseum on October 26.

After a close game, the Saints came out on top, 72-67. One of the referees, who came from the Basketball Association of the Philippines, commented it was "like a championship game."

About the PDBL
The PDBL was formed in 2006 by Camilo Mendez, who is currently the league's chairman. Today, there are nine teams from Metro Manila and nearby areas that are competing in the league. Mendez is hoping that more teams will join the league in the future.

The league is in the process of training persons who are deaf to become basketball referees, so as to provide them with a livelihood. Also, they are working on a sports league exclusively for persons who are deaf. Other sports will include badminton, bowling, table tennis, billiards, and chess.

PDBL's third season will run until December 7, 2008, with games held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
